Training camps are underway. The preseason has officially kicked off and the 2015 regular season is just weeks away. With that, let’s continue our look at the NFL, team by team, highlighting the good news, the bad news, and the overall impression.
New York Jets (4-12, 1-5 Div.)
Good News – Brandon Marshall is a Jet.
The Jets’ wide receivers look very good on paper. They enter the 2015 season with Eric Decker returning along with Brandon Marshall and Devin Smith, a rookie out of Ohio State. Marshall is what makes this group look dangerous. He has always been a big target who can handle double teams and be the number one target in any offense. At 6’4” and 230 pounds, Marshall is a big, physical receiver who averages 12.6 yards per catch for his career. He is now a New York Jet and provides both a true number one receiver as well as the experience of a ten-year pro to the Jets locker room.
Bad News – Rex Ryan left a mess.
Todd Bowles inherited a roster that is making all the wrong headlines. His top defensive lineman, Sheldon Richardson, has already been suspended for the first games of the year for testing positive for marijuana. That suspension could be extended now that he’s facing street-racing and resisting arrest charges. Bowles’ starting quarterback, Geno Smith, is now out 6 to 10 weeks after getting into what Bowles described as a “childish” altercation with a reserve linebacker and getting his jaw broken. That linebacker was quickly released. Ryan Fitzpatrick will now take the reigns as the starting quarterback, leaving Jets fans with little to cheer for.
The Jets look like a club in disarray. Their quarterback got punched in the face by a teammate. Their top defensive lineman will likely miss most of the year. That being said, Todd Bowles is a great defensive mind and has Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie in the secondary, along with Muhammed Wilkerson and rookie first round pick Leonard Williams on the defensive line. Ryan Fitzpatrick has weapons to throw to and can always hand off to capable running back Chris Ivory….The good thing for the Jets is when they go 3 and 13 this year, they can be in contention for a top young quarterback prospect…again. All is not lost in New York. The Giants are still there.
